Tooth Loss is More Common Than you Think

According to the American College of Prosthodontists, 178 million American adults are missing at least one tooth. That’s more than half of the entire US population! When you lose a tooth, it’s important to seek dental work promptly. When you fail to replace a lost tooth, you invite a number of potential risks to your overall oral health. Your teeth can begin to shift fairly immediately after losing a tooth. Further, with enough time, your gums can begin to recede, and your jaw bone can begin to decay.

What to Do When you Lose a Tooth

With all those aforementioned risks, the best thing you can do when you lose a tooth is to schedule an emergency appointment with your dentist. From there, there are a few things you can do to keep your lost tooth and gums happy:
When you lose an adult tooth, it’s helpful to find it and to take good care of it. Don’t handle the tooth by the root, as you could further damage the tooth. Instead, try to hold it by the crown.
If possible, clean the tooth and place it back in the socket where you lost the tooth. This might sound crazy, but it could actually help keep the tooth and your gums healthy by the time you get into the dentist.
Don’t panic, and call your dentist right away! Typically if it’s just a lost tooth, there’s no need to call 911, or to go to the ER.
