Did you know that the American Association of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that all children have what they refer to as a “dental home” by age one? What the AAPD means by this is that children should have a regular dentist from a very young age, just like they have a primary care physician or pediatrician for their general health care.

When children get to interact with their dentist from an early age, usually by accompanying their parents or older siblings to the dentist office when they go for their appointments, they are much more comfortable with the dentist in later life. With Reason To Smile, they might even learn to enjoy regular checkups, including the sights, sounds, and smells, as well as the friendly faces and bright smiles of the staff.

For practical reasons, children’s “dental homes” are usually just the same dentist offices the parents and perhaps other family members such as grandparents go for their own oral health care maintenance. This way, there is only one dentist office to call for appointments, ask questions, and set up other dental services.
