How to Clean Dental Crowns

Your dentist has just permanently seated your new dental crown. Now what? How do you care for your new dental work? Dental crowns don’t need to be difficult to keep clean and bacteria free. They do require a special regimen in order to keep the underlying tooth and its roots free of decay. At Reason To Smile, we recommend the following routine.

Routine, Routine, Routine

The most important part of any cleaning regimen is to begin a routine and stick with it. Cleaning your teeth, gums and dental work not only keeps teeth strong and healthy, it will much less expensive in the long run. Dental work can be expensive to replace. Here is the routine we suggest for dental crowns:

  1. Brush Daily: Using a soft bristled brush, brush teeth for 2 minutes total. Focusing on the area near the gums. Brushing both morning and evening is vital to the health of the underlying tooth and keeps gums bacteria free.
  2. Floss: Flossing is key to keeping the areas around your dental crown clear of food particles that can cause decay and irritation. Once you’ve pushed the floss down between your crown and the adjacent tooth, let go of one side and pull the floss through. Pulling or yanking up on the floss can cause your crown to loosen.
  3. Rinse: Rinsing your teeth with a fluoride rinse after each meal can keep harmful bacteria from building up in between brushing.
  4. Fluoride Toothpaste: Using a fluoride toothpaste daily will fortify and strengthen your teeth and gums.
  5. Schedule Regular Cleanings: Regular cleanings are imperative to removing harmful plaque, catching small cavities and checking the health of your dental crown.

It can be easy to believe that once your crown is placed, that tooth is maintenance free. A dental crown only protects the tooth above the gum line. Without a proper cleaning routine, gums will recede and the underlying tooth can become decayed requiring additional dental work.
